6 - Six Degrees of Separation on Linkedin Update (Now 832 Group Members)
Last month I posted an entry about a group on Facebook called “Six degrees of separation - The Experiment” (it’s the largest group on Facebook). The group is an interesting case of how SNS might be used for viral/guerilla marketing. I believe part of the success of the growth of this group on Facebook was being at the right place at the right time. If this group had been started later, when there were more groups available, it may have not caught on as quickly.
Out of curiosity, on January 3rd I started a similar Six Degrees group on Linkedin:

At the time of my posting on March 13th there were 250 members. Today, just over a month later (44 days to be exact), there are now about 832 members. I plotted the cumulative growth, as well as the daily growth rate of the group over the entire 94 day period to date:
Daily Rate - More Detailed (Click to enlarge):
While it obviously hasn’t hit any tipping point yet, it still seems to be growing at a healthy pace. Will be interesting to see if it matches other viral campaign growth rates. I’ve done almost nothing to promote it. The spike around March 15 is partly due to the blog posting on that day and the posting of a question on Linkedin about the group.
I’ll keep you up to date as I learn more about who joins the group etc. Of course, if you want to join, feel free.

Looks like the group will hit the 1,000 members mark later today. That’s 168 new members since this post 12 days ago. Not bad, but definitely not any ‘tipping point’ either. We’ll do a short survey among the members and share the results here. I’m curious to learn a bit more about LI group users and also to compare them to Facebook. Has anyone seen any other research on this topic?
