Volvo Becomes Sexy?
After AdAge released a few of the findings from our 2009 GenX2Z College Study this morning I’ve had several requests to find out what the new list of Top-Ten College Brand are. Therefore I’ll post the table below which has this data overall for the past 5 years.
As you can see Nike remains the number one brand for the fourth year in a row, followed by Apple which took second place last year. Other Top-10 brands this year include: American Eagle, Sony, Gap, Old Navy, Caca Cola, Adidas, Dell, and Abercrombie.
The report also looks at favorite brands by category, and favorite and least favorite ads.
On a side note, this years favorite book among college women was Stephanie Meyers’ Twilight, which actually beat out Harry Potter. So last night my wife and I went to see the movie Twilight. I predict it will be very popular among the 13-21 year old girls. Also, I’m guessing Volvo C30, the only brand featured prominently in the movie, will be very popular among young women asking Mom & Dad for their first car this year.
If you don’t thing the girld noticed the product placement just do a quick search on Youtube for “Twilight Volvo” and you’ll be convinced. The question is can a hatchback Volvo pull off being sexy?

Hi Tom,
I own several variations of the Volvo 480 coupe - a sportscar designed for America but never sold there. My friend Bob in Maine travelled to the U.K. last year to buy a 343 ( compact ), a 1982 year model. Yet again, not sold in the U.S.?
It seems to me that Volvo have missed a lot of opportunities. Firstly, my 480. It’s a perfect ‘American’ coupe. Bob’s ‘82 343: wasn’t there a fuel crises in 1979, and didn’t Automakers rush to sell smaller cars? Seems to me that it was largely left to Subaru, Honda and Hyundai in the U.S.
There will, of course, always be a market for the ‘Turbo Brick’ Volvo’s, but I really do wonder about their research of markets throughout the 1980’s / 1990’s.
PS: I hope the Automakers in Detroit get through this crises … they need my hero Lee Iacocca back!
