Forget CMO: Wanted In 2012, Chief Social Media Officer (CSMO)

Have been wondering how long it will be before we have titles like Director of Social Networking (SNS) and Consumer Generated Media (CGM), or SVP of Social Networking?

Curious how long you think it will be before we have departments dedicated to promoting everyday brands on SNS and CGM. I’m predicting this could become somewhat common very soon…

Just wondering if it will be a part of marketing or corporate communications/pr?

This role is sorely needed for CPG firms and brand manufacturers. It’s my view that the role should live in eMarketing but the owner needs to have a high level of collaboration and input in the Social Media Calendar with PR/Corporate Communications, Marketing, Customer Service and HR.

The time to get in front of this fast growning trend is now.

It is an interesting question, but couldn’t you ask the same about any specific marketing function? I believe that social media marketing just like search marketing, email marketing or any other online or offline marketing all need to be part of the marketing leaders tactical and strategic toolkit. Just as you must gain a deep understanding of your consumer, you should also gain a deep understanding of all the ways to reach that consumer, engage with them and ultimately get them excited/interested enough in your product or service to purchase it. Also, social media marketing just like all online marketing tactics and strategies are constantly evolving. I am honestly not sure what we will call it in 2012 or even sooner in 2011, but what ever it is called, it will be important and have a big impact on marketing spend, activity and focus.

So for me the title is not as important as just being a great marketing leader and constantly educating yourself on the best ways to reach your target customer.

Maybe we should all just be called Marketing Leaders.

That position is already here. I am currently recruiting for such a position at Virtual Organization Management Institute: Chief Social Network Marketing Officer
