Obama Address = Promising Times For College Marketers
Anderson Analytics GenX2X study had identified CollegeHumor.com as one of the top-ten websites among college students two years ago. Interesting to see how content sites like these will perform against CGM type of sites (Facebook, MySpace, Live Journal etc.) in the future. Would be nice to see some content come back again.
Anyway, given what Obama said in his address last week, about the country’s new goal of sending 100% of Americans to college, I thought the following video from CollegeHumor.com was fitting.
Curious what others think about it. Academia will be an attractive market in a recession as the unemployed go back to school and the government picks up more of the bill.

I certainly agree; however, I feel important points to study simultaneously are
1) The trend of students ‘opting’ to go to school part - time, or even delay entrance into undergraduate due to the current economic climate.
2) What effect the current lay-offs will have on the ‘perceived’ value of a degree. Educated professionals, many with advanced degrees, are among the jobless currently.
These two observations will surely lead to a change in people’s perceived value of an education, as prior it was seen as the gateway to a great and secure job.
Therefore, sending 100% of Americans to college must also be accompanied with 100% job opportunity - if not, the value of an education will just continue to decline. In turn, making the story college marketers tell less “authentic.” (thanks to Godin for the marketing speak).
I certainly speak from experience, as I possess my MBA with 10-years work experience, yet was laid-off in December and am having quite the fight to find another position.

I completely agree with Mr. Varlaro. I am exactly in the same boat: Have BSEE,MSEE, MBA, PMP and lost my job in December and looking for opportunities. It does not make sense to have education unless there are jobs that you can use your education. Otherwise we will be creating educated jobless people instead of uneducated jobless ones. I strongly belive that the companies that produce goods (tangible or intangible like software) need to be rewarded with some form of monetary reward like tax break to promote job creation. Otherewise we will continue watching our jobs go to India, China…
