Top Business Books Among Market Research Professionals

January 5th, 2010 · 9 Comments

Today’s data table from the Next Gen Market Research Trends Survey being released this Thursday, with over 855 market researchers responding, is below. I think we all know market researchers like to read. Well here are the top 13 business books:

Good to Great
The Tipping Point
Blink
Blue Ocean Strategy
Outliers
Who Moved My Cheese
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Predictably Irrational
How Customers Think
Made to Stick
The Goal
The World is Flat
The Wisdom of Crowds

Specifically the question was “What is your favorite business book?”.

Interestingly, during the past couple of years, I’ve also had the opportunity to work with and survey senior level marketing executives of MENG (Marketing Executives Networking Group). Therefore I took the liberty to compare and contrast the last MENG survey results to the NGMR results. As you can see there is quite a bit of overlap.

It looks like my fellow Next Gen Market Researchers need to read Positioning written by my friends Al Ries and Jack Trout. It is an excellent book for any research info positioning or brand differentiation.

I’m surprised that there’s nothing on the list about game theory. Next on my reading list is probably Blue Ocean Strategy, I’ve had it for a while but haven’t had a chance to read it. I think my favorite on this list is probably The Tipping Point.

Is your favorite business book on the list?

Stay tuned for more….

Talking on general business books, i would have liked that crossing the chasm made it in top 10.

    Hi Tom,

I would have named “Crossing the Chasm” as a favorite (already on the MENG list) but would also have expected “The Long Tail” by Chris Anderson to be there. The paradigm shift in having a tremendous amount of (especially digital) products available, selling relatively few of each, and make great business from that is one of the very interesting aspects brought along by the web; and it really opens up for many new interesting businesses.

I am a bit disappointed not not see any obvious quant MR books in the list, despite the recent advances in quant MR techniques that help add stats to qualitative approaches..

    Additions to the list

The Black Swan, Games Indians Play - Why we are the way we are? :- They are not business books per se but have a penchant for analysis of the human rational- quite though provoking as to the way history and culture impact the buying behaviour
